Gabe liked Destiny when it was very much not a cool thing to like. Kiko and I used to give him shit about it all the time. Kiko never got entirely wrapped up in it, but it had me pretty fucked up for a while - to the extent that I still maintain an active eye on lore developments even if I don't feel like grinding whatever new dust they've invented.
I was just about to say that I never wrote any fics, thereby elevating me above Gabriel's more commonplace pursuits, but that's not even true. I definitely wrote fic, I just did it with him. And then, arguably, despite my claims of moral primacy, heedless of the danger, I went on to write several more at Bungie's explicit direction! And then Ikora said one of my lines in the game dialogue? I guess that makes it an Ascended Fic or something. Maybe it's like how Great Moms Get Promoted To Grandma or something, like it says on the mug. Who knows.
I don't draw too bright a line between fanfic and just… fic, and that's probably apparent from the usage cases above. I think there is Fiction of varying qualities, and I guess I don't think it's especially interesting if we start talking about whether or not an amateur writer learning how to do shit is an official licensee or something. If "fan fiction" is given to rough-hewn tropes and obsessive tics, it's like any young work. Good form comes with time. Learn from everyone. And then, then, learn to file off the serials.
Know this! Tonight at 4pm PDT, the next chapter of Acquisitions Incorporated: The "C" Team's final chapter is revealed. Pursued by the idiotic white dragon Hibernax, The Collections Agency decides that's no reason not to stop into a rustic spa. Unfortunately, there are rude guests in the hot springs. Well, in a manner of speaking. Come get your fill of artisanal "actual play" D&D and cool prizes at 4pm, and stay after at 6pm for Table Talk and additional prizes. As always, many thanks to Elderwood Academy, Level Up Dice, and Codename Entertainment/Idle Champs for the continued support.
(CW)TB out.
