The "Mortal Kombat Rebirth" short exists in that continuum that appends gravitas to fundamentally ridiculous subject matter by attempting to reconcile it with the real world. That's something I do as a form of recreation; I'm not trying to say that this isn't a good time investment. Alan Moore takes cultural shrapnel and transforms it, via a similar process, into material that assaults the mind. I'm just not certain that every brand can withstand this kind of analysis.
Did any of you check out that Transformers demo, the one that just went up? What do we make of this motherfucker?
I downloaded it without looking at anything but the file size, so I was surprised to learn that it was an exclusively multiplayer affair. Much effort has gone into it, certainly: the pioneering work done in Call of Duty 4 is seen here, in another guise. In particular, its "horde" mode - called Escalation - has some ideas about progression that I'd love to explore. I'm not entirely sure that the multiplayer is the draw, but Infinity Ward's metaphor isn't necessarily misspent here.
It's lazy on my part, but if you think about levels and perks, you've got the basic idea. Where things get wider is with discrete classes that gate abilities off from one another. On top of this, which is probably no surprise, each of these classes transforms into a particular type of vehicle. A Soldier becomes a tank, and will do so, and even though you are playing a game called Transformers which takes place on a planet called Cybertron the whole point of which is to house transforming robots, when the guy you had dead to rights become a tank and throws a charged slug through your chest you will be surprised.
There are substantial holes in the experience, but if your retail release includes only only six maps, maybe you don't want your entire offering cracked wide open. To a larger concern, the delivered executable is missing the two support classes that broaden games of this kind: the Leader and the Scientist roles I would ordinarily play in a game like this aren't there. Scientists in this mode transform into Air Vehicles, so it may be that they don't want us seeing those in general, but any reasonable person would have concerns about mixing these roles up in latency environments. We're missing key data we would use to make good decisions. I keep coming back to it, though, even though I supposedly "know" what there is to "know." I am fascinated by this urge.
