It turns out that Gabe is fucking obsessed with PSVR2. The improvements to the overall experience - and a certain amount of personal curation of the game library based on his shameful weaknesses - mean that he is going hog fucking wild on games like Rez, even though already owns it everywhere it's ever come out, but now he can live inside it and blast target chains with his literal eyes. Gran Turismo in VR is the apotheosis of some desire in him, made manifest initially through iRacing, but elevated here through GT7's well understood "auto-eroticism" and the Logitech PRO Racing Wheel he got from Logitech because people are always giving him shit.
So, games where you move at a constant rate are fine, and games where you would be sitting if you were living inside the game are fine too. But games like Resident Evil, where you're doing traditional game shit just in VR, make his vestibular system incredibly angry. He thought he'd try it because he was feeling invincible after his first day and was quickly laid low. Many VR experiences I've… experienced, I guess you could say, don't have especially true "black" as a color. It's always a little gray, which I haven't found to be an especially onerous trade for the ability to inhabit imaginary worlds. But apparently the dark is a real thing on the PSVR2, man's ancient enemy, and he was earnestly scared before he raised his pretend flashlight.
I've never used a set fancy enough to have Eye Tracking, and as cool and effortless as that makes some interactions, it also allows foveated rendering, which means that it knows where you're looking, so it pours GPU resources into that spot. It's pretty rad shit. If you've seen somebody streaming games and thought, "Huh, this seems pretty blurry," it's almost certainly because you aren't looking where they're looking. Streaming VR is sort of a dodgy proposition even in the best of times, honestly.
I gotta do some passport shit this morning, but as soon as I'm done I'll be heading over to Dabe's place for another hotly anticipated "Fridabe" stream. He'll be starting ahead of me, jumping into the Hi-Fi Rush he's been saving, and his primal sense of the rhythm will surely help him succeed. This afternoon, maybe more Turbo Golf Racing with the channel - gonna bring my Steam Deck over there and see how that goes. Anyhow, that all starts around 10am PST!
(CW)TB out.
