The news that Nintendo is shutting down the 3DS and WiiU eShops comes at an interesting time because I’ve been thinking a lot about the games I own recently. For the last few weeks I’ve been going through old boxes in my garage and trying to sort out what games and consoles I actually own physical versions of. As it turns out I own more 3DS and DS games than anything else when it comes to real physical media.
The final accounting of my collection ended up being 149 games across various consoles going back to my first Sega Master System. I’m honestly surprised I managed to hold on to as much as I have. For most of the early part of my gaming life I was renting games so unless I just never took it back (which happened) I didn’t actually own most of my games in the Genesis and SNES years. I’ll never forget taking my first paycheck from working at the golf course to Toys R Us and buying a 32x and Doom. Once I was working I was able to buy more games but back then I was so hungry to play all the latest stuff that the only way I could keep up was to be constantly trading in the stuff I had already played or sell off my old consoles.
I’ve been going through some boxes in the garage trying to track down all my old games and I found some classics today. Sega does what Nintendon’t! Who else was a Genesis nerd? pic.twitter.com/fuzCKm8kNr

Today people want $400 for a copy of Kolibri and I’m not even mad. First of all it is arguably the greatest hummingbird based shooter available for the 32x, and second I’m impressed with anyone who had the foresight to hang onto that stuff! I’m not interested in these games as investments though. My kids have a college fund and it’s in a bank not a mint Virtual Boy. My interest in this stuff is purely mid-life crisis related. I can’t deny the warm feeling of nostalgia when I boot up Aladdin on the Genesis. I’ve been having a lot of fun hitting the local used game store Another Castle and hunting for old gems from my youth. I don’t need them to be complete in the box, I just want to fire up some of these old games again and step into the time machine.
I’ve been having a lot of fun digging around ?@_AnotherCastle_? here is todays find! Somehow it think I missed this the first time around. What a great game! pic.twitter.com/PrTwo0JVkV

I’ve got some new cables and adapters coming this week that should allow me to stream this stuff. Once I get it all hooked up I’ll let you know and we can plan out a few retro game streams on Tuesdays. In the meantime I need to take a look at the Wiiu and 3DS games I own digitally but down currently have downloaded. My guess is that some of them I’ll be fine with being lost to the ether but there will be a few I’ll want to download or even find a physical copy of. If you’re in the same boat I’d start looking soon because the prices for these games is about to go to the fucking moon!
