Now that you can watch it at home, I finally got around to seeing Dune Part two over the weekend. I’ve only read the first book in the series but I’ve read it a few times which is not something I normally do. I love the movies and think they do an incredible job of translating one of my favorite books. I also caught the final episode of Shogun and that’s one of the best TV series I’ve ever watched. Personally I prefer artful and ambiguous endings to ones that break everything down for the audience. It’s probably obvious from the stories we tell but I think it’s important to leave room for the reader to bring their imagination to the world.
I’m playing all kinds of stuff right now (mostly racing games) and I figured I should make myself useful and give you all the lowdown.
After almost 40 hours I finally wrapped up the main single player campaign for this game. The story is decent but mostly I just love the map and the way the cars feel. I still have lots of stuff to do in the open world and I’m not done with it by a long shot.
Steam says that in the last two weeks I’ve played 60 hours of Planet Crafter! The vast majority of that time was poured into the crafting of a world I share with my wife Kara. We started with a barren chunk of rock and just yesterday we arrived at what is essentially the end of the game. Now we have a planet covered in trees with a breathable atmosphere and full of weird creatures we designed. The game is still relatively early in development and they have plans to continue adding new content but it’s already a solid experience and a lot of fun especially with friends.
This is a racing game that came out back in 2020 but I only just discovered it. It’s an arcade racer with a beautiful anime/vaporwave style. The main hook here is that it’s a racing game that uses a controller but in a very novel way. The left stick gently steers your car while the right analog stick makes your car drift and determines its angle. It’s almost like the twin stick shooter version of a racing game. It sounds a little weird but only takes a couple seconds to figure out and after an hour of playing I was drifting around these tracks like a pro. I played it on Steam but you can grab it on everything including Switch.
Seeing the anime styled cars in Inertial Drift reminded me of an old Playstation game but I could not put my finger on exactly which one. I did a google search for "Anime Racing Game PS2" and there it was, Auto Modilista! This was a racing game from Capcom that came out back in 2002 for the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube. My local used game shop didn’t have it but I found an inexpensive copy on eBay and it’s on the way. I’ll see if I can get my PS2 hooked up through my PC so I can stream because this seems like it could be fun to check out together on Twitch.
Speaking of Playstation games, there’s another racer on Steam Called Night Runners Prologue that I’ve only just started to investigate. This is essentially an extended demo for a game whose seemingly successful Kickstarter just wrapped up yesterday. Nightrunners is an homage to classic Playstation racers with some modern sensibilities. I love the style and I’m looking forward to their full release!
