There are a couple interesting projects that popped up in our “Feeling Nostalgic” feed this week. This feature on the site pulls up comics from the archive that appeared on this day years ago. It just so happens that two very cool series ran during this period.
Automata
After pitching the idea with a one page comic we finished our first Automata story this week fifteen years ago. We went on to tell a few more stories in this setting that takes place during prohibition with a twist. Instead of alcohol, it is machine intelligence that has been prohibited. Carl is a “Swangee Man” , a thinking machine who has been grandfathered in and is now working with private detective Sam Regal. We even had a great series written by Book of Eli and Rogue One scribe Gary Whitta and drawn by the incredibly talented Ben Caldwell called Blood and Oil.
Sand
This week eleven years ago we finished our Sand storyline. In Sand the hook is that a colony ship has been forced to crash land on an inhospitable planet. After centuries, the people it was carrying have made a life for themselves and forgotten how they arrived here. The damaged colony ship has built a series of “prophets” to go out into the world, find her people and bring them back.
Sand was one of the very first comic projects Jerry and I worked on together. We photocopied black and white versions of our mini comic and left them in stores around Spokane hoping someone might find and read them. I wrote about the details and posted the original comic a while ago if you want to see how it all started.
