I mean, I gotta make comics and stuff because it's a big part of my job. And Tim Sweeney and I probably wouldn't get along in real life; some people are literally too smart to talk to and I think he's probably one of them. I really, really want him to be wrong that AI will be involved in all future (game) production but I'm afraid he isn't.
The core concept is that Tim thinks informing the customer if a game uses AI is either unnecessary or irrelevant, on account of it being absolutely everywhere, in everything. These are merely elaborations of his position for us to entertain ourselves with, though. Like many technologists, he sees this stuff as being functionally no different from a printing press or a lathe. They think if you aren't chewing on a piece of wood until it becomes a chair, you're some kind of hypocrite when you oppose this shit. They think a neural network digesting a corpus is the same as a human being reading a book, and so they tend to see opponents of these "obvious, inevitable" technologies as primitives afraid of fire.
But I'm not afraid of fire. I'm afraid of being burned, and they want fire everywhere. So, yeah. We're gonna fucking fight about it.
I mean, I stopped playing ARC Raiders - the only game that could possibly confront Expedition 33 for Game of the Year - over an AI related content issue so esoteric that even the moral paragons at Kotaku have cast it aside in favor of SEO riches. Long known as an ethical beacon for the community, these newly hunched and craven pig-men are probably in there right now getting whatever the purple version of an ARC Alloy is. These are all just jokes, I don't give a shit. These are the last days, kids; get your paper. In any case, they're smarter than me. I'm the one who shoveled sixty dollars into a furnace for Good Boy Points no store on Earth will honor.
We're entering an era of utter demoralization, where any notable phenomenon is being falsified to some degree. The most fecund social media platform available is larded heavily with false scenes of people trapped in caves, of the British Sovereign wielding some ancient law and reclaiming primacy. The hottest song on the service had AI vocals. One of the foremost experts in detecting AI on there came out with a mea culpa about a false positive - even he can't ascertain what is real and isn't, and he's synonymous with the practice. HIs identity is bound up in being able to know this.
The industry-standard software for making… well, almost anything are now fully colonized by AI, lures packed dense like the crust of a pecan pie. They're subject to the same manias that all public companies are - "sustainability" in quotes, crypto, metaverse, service, all market fetishes wholly decoupled from the end customer. Knowing what he knows, and trying to model his thoughts, Tim can foresee a moment where making a game using the Unreal Engine is inextricable from making a game with AI. What he said was bad. Startlingly, the truth is even worse.
