I’m probably not going to play anymore Marvel Heroes. After the prologue I arrived at the Avengers headquarters and immediately saw tons of the free heroes as well as a few of the purchasable ones. It looks sort of silly to see five hawkeyes running around but I figured this was the hub where you buy shit, get outfitted and group up so it’s not a big deal. Tycho and I formed a party and jumped into the first zone. Now I was imagining that it would be an instance that Tycho and I would share and we would beat up some dudes together similar to Diablo or torchlight. That was not the case.
It’s actually a zone similar to an MMO with tons of people running around killing mobs that spawn, get beat up by roving bands of heroes and then re-spawn. So we arrive in the zone and immediately notice that all the bad guys are already dead. We begin moving through the city streets and find more corpses scattered around. Eventually some bad guys spawn behind and run to catch up with us. I’m not sure why some gang thugs would run towards the Thing and Daredevil but they did and we beat them up. All the while we see groups of heroes running around just like you would in any other MMO. Over here you see three Scarlet Witches beating up some dudes. Around the corner you find four the Things and a couple Spidermans doing the same. Eventually we found a massive group fight against Electro and joined in. I was one of five the Things hitting this dude and I felt like a complete jackass. It’s very cool to be the Thing. It’s dumb to be one of many the Things. Also I have a hard time believing there are many bad guy type problems that five the Things could not solve.
MMO's have classes but Storm is not a class in the same way that “Wizard” is a class. I could be very happy being a wizard in a group of wizards but I don’t want to be a Gandalf in a group of Gandlafs. I understand that there are different costumes you can put on and that might help a little but I’m not interested in being silver age Captain America fighting next to cowboy Captain America. It just seems like a very odd decision to do it this way, rather than make it a 4 to 8 player co-op game.
Obviously Tycho and I didn't like it but Marvel Heroes is free to play so there’s nothing stopping you from giving it a try.
