Gabriel has returned, whole but not unchanged by The Wilderness.
You gotta check out Storybook Brawl. Everything after this is just gonna be elaborations on the tweet I made after I played it, which reads as follows:

It's an auto-battler game, so success isn't about APM but team composition and knowing when to lean hard into what the auction row is serving up. It does a couple things different - there's some card play potential even in the auction phase, which are typically the calm before the storm, where novel synergies can be executed. As is common in the genre, you want to try and build matches for the characters you draft, but this one doesn't really trade on the scaling faction bonuses that typically dominate play - the tableau is more in the vein of a traditional TCG, with the addition of front and back ranks. When you "match 3" units, a staple of the form, the unit improves but you're also allowed to draft level appropriate artifacts that you can play into or that can guide builds. I keep heading back in - there's so many angles I want to try out. That's a very healthy indication.
When I was streaming it last Friday in Gabriel's absence, outside of a raid from the actual developers I found incredibly intimidating as a new player (!!!), I had a blast. Frankly, once the surprise wore off even that was cool - there were a lot of great tips from people who had clearly been submerged in the games Stygian recesses, made invulnerable thereby.
(CW)TB out.
