I didn't leave it up all year, exactly, but it was up until April or so, which I think is still pretty long. Long enough to be really fuckin' weird in the window of your home.
Long enough for a neighbor to ask.
2021 broke my mind in half. That's the best way I can think of to put it. 2020 was bad for all the reasons you might think it would be, but then we had to live through it for another year, without our reserves - replete with the knowledge that no one was coming to save us. I wish this were some kind of dramatic exaggeration, but it isn't. 2021 was the year we learned that progress - not wickedness or perfidy - was the aberration.
I was sad, incredibly, until I realized who I had with me: All-star shit. Think about who has your back. Think about who you have when push comes to shove. Those are the people we invest in, and who have invested in us. I count you in that group - I've been at this for twenty-three years, and if you're reading this, listen to me. Times like this are why we invented holidays. We forgot, but this is why. If Mike and I make a .jpeg, it's to help you take your mind off this shit for a minute. We write it for the same reason. Everybody here at Penny Arcade has a single purpose - to make the world a tiny bit better, in the radius we can control. There's no better purpose. And we aren't done doing it.
Merry Christmas.
