Playing games like Monopoly or in our case Civilization VI with your kids really gives you a fun glimpse into their personalities and can introduce great opportunities to teach some real life lessons. Monopoly can teach them about the realities of paying rent and managing your money while Civ can teach them how to dominate the world through brutal nuclear war.
My youngest son Noah is brand new to the game but has picked it up quickly. He favors military might while my oldest son Gabe prefers a scientific win. In most of our games Kara and I will be managing knights on horses while Noah anchors aircraft carriers off our coast and Gabe lands missions on the moon. I can’t help but be proud that I’ve raised such competent gamers. Even as the bombs fall on my renaissance era capital city and the nuclear fallout spreads across my lands I think to myself, “that’s my boy.”
At around the 25 hour point in Unicorn Overlord I unlocked the “Colosseum” and the ability to play multiplayer rounds. I was already hooked on the game and never expected this option but it’s another incredible addition to an already excellent game. These are asynchronous battles that let you pit your favorite crews against ones that have been uploaded by other players. It’s a great way to see how other people are building their units and get some formation ideas. It’s also a fun way to test out your builds and earn a currency called Coliseum Coins. These can be turned in for goodies that will permanently upgrade your characters. It’s early but Unicorn Overlord is already on my short list for game of the year.
Last but not least, My Captain America variant is coming to Marvel Snap and you can get it for free at PAX East 2024! It also comes with the “Welcome Home” card back celebrating 20 years of PAX!
It's wild to remember back to that first PAX in Bellevue when Kara was pregnant with Gabe and people were sleeping on the floors at night. Now Gabe is a student at Digipen making games and PAX has spread worldwide. Old people always tell you it goes fast but holy shit guys.
