As a fundamentally antisocial person, I’m not sure social media was ever going to be a good fit for me. Like the comic suggests, I have finally deleted my Twitter account. I don’t think it’s ever been a healthy place to be for me but under its new management the service has gotten even worse. I found myself spending hours reading through trending hashtags and blocking idiots. After realizing what a colossal waste of fucking time this was I quit the service back in December but still felt weird about having an account. I was a frog who had managed to jump out of the boiling water but felt like he needed to keep the pot around. Finally I reached out to about five people that I had only ever communicated with via Twitter, gave them my email address and then nuked the account. I highly encourage anyone else still there to do the same. Trust me, ditch your twitter account and spend that time playing games. You’ll feel a lot better.
I spent the weekend playing old games and had a blast. I’ve been going back and checking out classic racing games that I missed entirely or couldn’t really appreciate because my interest in cars is relatively recent. Specifically this weekend I played Need for Speed Shift and Driveclub.
NFS Shift is a game that came out back in 2009 for the Xbox 360 and the PS3. Rather than an open world full of illicit arcade street racing, Shift leaned more towards a racing sim with real world tracks and a racing line to follow. The combination of cool cars with arcade handling on real world tracks like Spa and Brands Hatch is a blast. You can choose to bump and slam your way to the lead or you can race clean and the game will reward you either way building you a logo with visual elements that represent your evolving driving style.
Driveclub is a game that came out back in 2014 for the PS4. This is another game that straddles the line between sim and arcade racer with real world tracks as well as tracks inspired by locations all over the world. First of all, this does not look like a 10 year old game holy fucking shit! I don’t know what brand of witchcraft was used to produce this thing but it looks like it could have been released yesterday. Seriously, the environments, weather effects and lighting are still stunning. The gameplay is also a ridiculously fun blend of technical racing and arcade handling. Sadly huge chunks of the game are no longer functionally because of the online services having been shut down. It still has a massive single player campaign that I intend to investigate though.
