It’s true that most of the books I tend to read are science fiction but I occasionally branch out into history and other non fiction. I wanted to recommend an interesting book I just finished called The Gross.
The Gross is an in depth look at the summer movies of 1998 that includes fascinating interviews with actors, producers, writers and directors at the time. I remember this summer vividly as it was full of really wild movies like Godzilla, Saving Private Ryan, Armageddon, Something About Mary, Deep Impact, The Truman Show and Blade. If you like seeing how the sausage gets made, this is the book for you. As I read through the book I also watched a bunch of the movies. Some of them I had not seen since 98 and others I had missed completely. For some reason I had dismissed Deep Impact at the time and instead was excited to see Armageddon, the other asteroid movie that year. After finally watching Deep Impact, I have to say it’s actually a much better movie than Armageddon! The book is a really interesting look behind the scenes at the industry as they were trying to come to terms with a generational change in audience behavior and the onset of the effects driven blockbuster.
Okay, Game recommendation time. It’s not a new game but my hunt for fun cooperative games to play with my family recently uncovered a game called Keywe. I’ve been playing it with Kara and we’re having a blast. You and a partner play as tiny birds who must help manage a post office in the wilderness. You’ll play a series of mini games that will task you with transcribing messages, sorting packages and delivering letters. All of the games will require teamwork and communication to complete. You can also dress up your bird! It’s on sale right now for $8 and I highly recommend grabbing a copy.
Speaking of games on sale, you can currently pick up Sonic Allstars Racing transformed for $5! This is easily one of the best kart racing games ever made and if you haven’t played it before, you are in for a treat. It’s a racer that lets you jump between cars, boats and planes as you race through tracks based on classic Sega properties. In some ways it feels like a modern Diddy Kong Racing. It also runs great on the Steam Deck!
