They don't have Spongebob yet - yet - but boy do they have a lot of other shit. Fortnite's "one weird trick" is ingesting intellectual property in such a way as to unify it, aesthetically. You can also see the skin all the time, because you're looking from outside. It's clearly a kind of collectible figurine that is wearing a bunch of other collectibles. PUBG had crates and stuff too, but they were always very… odd. This is something else. There is something about the juxtaposition of milsim lookin' tacticool and… I dunno… Cheech & Chong?
I mean, it doesn't seem to bother the vast majority of people playing the game. If you've been away, it's pretty shocking to come in and see (for example) a Disco Skeletor, which is not a thing I just made up right now but a real product for sale. I guess I'll give them Anubis as a skin, given the goings on from round to round. It might seem on the surface that a jackal-headed god of death might be ill-fitting, but he was almost certainly on the field - just in more of a managerial role.
Somehow, Gabriel's youths got us back into Rainbow 6: Siege, a game I haven't played seriously since 2015. Even here, in this special operations espionage nightmare hole, you've got Halo or Rick and Morty tie-in stuff. I never see it in actual rounds though, I don't know if it has some kind of stench in this context. People play this game to win and my guess is that looking like… you know, Rick Sanchez doesn't really scream "Seal Team Six."
I remember wondering if Ubisoft would let Rainbow Six live, let it live, and they did. Some part of that calculation must be the potential for Rick and Morty skins, or a Battle Pass whose contours they just changed and I don't one hundred percent understand at this exact second. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, I guess. R6 is one of very few games that gains texture when being watched as a sport, and it has a lot more in common with a Dishonored-style "immersive sim" than it does with Counter-Strike or COD. I can't believe how good it is and I can't believe they let it happen.
(CW)TB out.
